  4. Apollo/X.25 enables Apollo workstations to communicate over packet-
  5. switched wide area networks (WAN). Since X.25 is an international
  6. standard, the Apollo/X.25 protocol allows Apollo systems to communicate
  7. with a wide variety of products from other vendors, including
  8. mainframes, minis, workstations, and PCs. Apollo/X.25 users are able to
  9. conduct long distance communications for file transfer, electronic
  10. mail, remote log in, and remote program execution.

  14. Apollo/X.25 is based on the 1980 recommendations of the CCITT
  15. (Consultative Committee for International Telephony and Telegraphy).
  16. Apollo/X.25 is yet another example of Apollo's commitment to openness
  17. and standards.
  18.    The Apollo/X.25 applications will run on a 68K workstation or server
  19. using a COM-SCAT card. Any Apollo workstation, including the DN10000,
  20. attached to a LAN running Domain Distributed Services (DDS) is able to
  21. use the server/workstation's X.25 capabilities.

  24. o Provides shared X.25 gateway services to a community of Apollo
  25.   workstations attached to Apollo Token Ring, Ethernet, or IBM Token
  26.   Ring LANs.
  27. o Conforms to CCITT 1980 recommendations.
  28. o Supports X.28, X.29, and X.3 PAD functionality.
  29. o Operates at up to 64 Kbytes per second.
  30. o Supports glass TTY and VT100 virtual terminal emulation.
  31. o Simultaneously provides more than 128 virtual circuits (X.25
  32.   sessions).
  33. o Provides a call library that allows users to write Pascal, C, and
  34.   Fortran 77 applications that use X.25 virtual circuits.
  35. o Allows Apollo-to-Apollo file transfer.
  36. o Public carrier subscription parameters are set at the time of X.25
  37.   software initialization.
  38. o Supports standard and non-standard window sizes and packet sizes.

  43. Hardware Options
  44. Apollo/X.25 uses the Serial Controller-AT communications controller,
  45. which can be used in any 68000-based Apollo workstation with an AT-
  46. compatible bus. The Serial Controller-AT provides two communications
  47. lines with speeds up to 64 Kbits. Each port can be configured for one
  48. of three supported physical interfaces:  RS232, RS422/449, and V.35.
  49. Interfaces and line speeds can be mixed between the ports without
  50. restriction. Refer to the Serial Controller-AT product brief for more
  51. information. The Serial Controller-AT can be installed in either a
  52. dedicated server or a stand- alone workstation.

  54. Virtual Terminal and File Transfer Capabilities
  55. Apollo/X.25 conforms with the X.28, X.29, and X.3 PAD standards to
  56. provide line-oriented communications. These features allow users to
  57. write programs that may call upon the services of minis and mainframes
  58. from several different vendors.
  59.    An interactive terminal emulation built upon the X.28, X.29 and X.3
  60. standards provides Apollo users with glass TTY or VT100 terminal
  61. services. These services allow the user to log into systems that
  62. support X.25 for the purpose of running programs, querying databases,
  63. or exchanging mail messages.
  64.    Also included in the standard Apollo/X.25 product is the Apollo File
  65. Transfer Service (FTS). This feature gives Apollo users the ability to
  66. transfer files reliably from one Apollo system to another via the X.25
  67. PSN. In the event of a temporary failure of the communications line,
  68. the FTS application automatically detects the problem, suspends
  69. operations, and then ensures that the file is transmitted in its
  70. entirety once the line is restored.
